What is the UEFA Champions League?

The UEFA Champions League is European club football’s top competition, run by UEFA since 1955, when it began as the European Cup for that season’s domestic league champions only. It was rebranded the UEFA Champions League in 1992, when the format expanded to admit more than one club from the strongest leagues and added a group stage ahead of the knockout rounds.

From the 2024/25 season the competition switched to a single 36-club "league phase": there are no lettered groups any more. Every club plays eight different opponents (four at home, four away), drawn from four seeding pots, and all 36 clubs are ranked in one table. The top eight go straight into the Round of 16; the clubs ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout phase play-off for the remaining eight Round of 16 spots; the bottom twelve are eliminated with no European football to fall back on.

Real Madrid are the competition’s most successful club by a wide margin, with 15 titles stretching from the first-ever European Cup in 1956 to their most recent win in 2024. Paris Saint-Germain are the defending champions, having beaten Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final for their first title, then retained it by beating Arsenal on penalties in the 2026 final after a 1-1 draw.

The 2026/27 season kicked off on 8–9 September with Round 1 of the league phase. The 2027 final, which will decide this season’s champion, is scheduled for Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.

1–8: straight to Round of 169–24: knockout phase play-offs25–36: eliminated

How the knockout stage works

The league phase runs through January; the knockout bracket isn’t seeded yet

1–8: straight to the Round of 16

The top eight clubs after all eight league-phase rounds skip the play-off round entirely and go directly into the Round of 16, seeded and unseeded for the draw.

9–24: knockout phase play-offs

Clubs ranked 9th to 24th are drawn into eight two-legged play-off ties in February. The eight winners join the top eight in the Round of 16.

25–36: eliminated

The bottom twelve clubs are out of the Champions League for the season, with no parachute into the Europa League from this stage.

Round of 16 onward

From the Round of 16 through the semifinals, every tie is played over two legs, home and away, on aggregate score. There’s no away-goals rule; a tie level on aggregate goes to extra time and then penalties. The final is a single match at a neutral venue.

Knockout ties appear here as soon as the draw is made.

How the UEFA Champions League works

Qualifying rounds

Clubs from lower-ranked leagues and those that miss automatic entry play a series of qualifying rounds through July and August. 29 clubs enter the league phase automatically by finishing in the right spot domestically; the rest come through qualifying.

League phase

36 clubs, one table, eight rounds from September to January. Each club is drawn against eight different opponents, two from each of four seeding pots, playing four at home and four away. No lettered groups.

Knockout phase play-offs

Clubs finishing 9th to 24th play a two-legged play-off in February for the eight remaining Round of 16 spots. Clubs finishing in the top eight are exempt.

Knockout rounds and final

Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals are all two-legged ties on aggregate, with extra time and penalties if needed. The final is a single match at a pre-selected neutral venue, played in late May.

The story so far

Real Madrid’s 15 European titles, most recently in 2024 against Borussia Dortmund, is the largest gap between first and second place in any major trophy count in club football; AC Milan and Bayern Munich are next with seven and six respectively. Real Madrid also won five consecutive titles between 1956 and 1960, the competition’s opening five seasons, a record that’s unlikely ever to be matched under the modern calendar.

Paris Saint-Germain’s back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026 ended one of the longest waits for a maiden Champions League win among Europe’s traditionally wealthy clubs, and made them the first club since Real Madrid’s 2016-2018 three-peat to retain the trophy. The switch to the 36-club league phase for 2024/25 replaced the familiar eight-group format and was UEFA’s biggest structural change to the competition since the group stage itself was introduced in 1992.

UEFA Champions League FAQs

How many teams are in the Champions League?

36 clubs take part in the 2026/27 league phase, down from the 32-club, eight-group format used before 2024/25 but larger than any previous era of the competition.

Is there still a group stage in the Champions League?

No. Since 2024/25 there are no lettered groups. All 36 clubs sit in a single table, each playing eight different opponents rather than three in a small group.

How do teams qualify for the Champions League knockout stage?

The top eight in the 36-club table go straight to the Round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th play a two-legged knockout phase play-off in February for the remaining eight spots. The bottom 12 are eliminated.

Who has won the most Champions League titles?

Real Madrid, with 15 titles between 1956 and 2024, more than double the next-best club, AC Milan, on seven.

Who is the defending Champions League champion?

Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2026 final, their second consecutive title after beating Inter Milan 5-0 in 2025.

Where is the 2027 Champions League final?

Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid. The two finalists will be confirmed once this season’s knockout rounds are complete.

What happens if a Champions League knockout tie is level after two legs?

It goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and to penalties if the scores are still level. There’s no away-goals rule at this stage of the competition.

The league phase table, fixtures and results are pulled from the client’s live match data feed and refreshed periodically.
