What is MLS?

Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top division of men’s professional soccer in the United States and Canada. Thirty clubs, split into a 15-team Eastern Conference and a 15-team Western Conference, play a 34-match regular season from February to November before the top finishers move into the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, a separate knockout tournament that decides the champion. There is no promotion or relegation: every club that plays in MLS this season is guaranteed a place next season too.

The league was founded in 1993 as part of the United States’ successful bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which required the country to establish a professional Division I league. MLS kicked off with 10 charter clubs in 1996 and has expanded steadily ever since, most recently adding San Diego FC in 2025, to reach today’s 30 clubs across the US and Canada.

Inter Miami CF won their first MLS Cup in December 2025, beating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1 in the final behind Lionel Messi. LA Galaxy remain the league’s most decorated club with six MLS Cups after adding the 2024 title, well clear of D.C. United’s four.

The table below is the overall 2026 regular-season standings across both conferences combined, computed from full-time results. Because MLS Cup Playoffs qualification and seeding are determined separately within each conference rather than off this combined table, see the Format section below for how the conference split and playoff bracket actually work.

How MLS works

Season structure

30 clubs play a 34-match regular season, 510 matches in total, from 21 February to 7 November 2026. The schedule is unbalanced rather than a full home-and-away round robin: clubs play conference rivals more often than clubs from the other conference.

Conferences, not promotion and relegation

MLS has no promotion or relegation. The 30 clubs are split into a 15-team Eastern Conference and a 15-team Western Conference, and every club keeps its place the following season regardless of where it finishes. New clubs join only through the league’s separate expansion process, most recently San Diego FC in 2025.

MLS Cup Playoffs

The nine highest-placed clubs in each conference (18 of 30 in total) qualify for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The 8th and 9th seeds in each conference meet in a single wild-card game, with the winner joining seeds 2-7 in a best-of-three Round One; from the Conference Semifinals onward it’s single-elimination, hosted by the higher seed, through to the MLS Cup Final on 18 December 2026.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated first by total wins, then goal differential, then goals scored, then fewest disciplinary points (accumulated from cautions and sendings-off), before further away/home-goal splits and, if still level, a coin toss.

The story so far

MLS was founded in 1993 and kicked off in 1996 with 10 clubs, part of the United States’ commitment to launching a professional Division I league after hosting the 1994 World Cup. D.C. United dominated the league’s early years, winning three of the first four MLS Cups, before LA Galaxy emerged as the league’s most successful club across the 2000s and 2010s, built around stars like Landon Donovan, the league’s all-time assists leader, and later the David Beckham era.

The league has expanded from its original 10 clubs to 30 today, adding markets across the US and Canada and building soccer-specific stadiums that transformed the game’s presentation. Atlanta United’s 2018 title, backed by record crowds at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Seattle Sounders’ back-to-back finals appearances in the late 2010s showed the league’s growing scale, while Josef Martinez’s 31-goal season for Atlanta that same year remains the single-season scoring record.

Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami in 2023 marked a new chapter, and the club delivered its first MLS Cup in December 2025, beating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1. LA Galaxy, meanwhile, added a sixth MLS Cup in 2024 to reclaim their place as the league’s most decorated club.

MLS FAQs

How many teams are in MLS?

MLS has 30 clubs for the 2026 season, split into a 15-team Eastern Conference and a 15-team Western Conference. San Diego FC, which joined as an expansion side in 2025, is the newest addition; the league has grown from the 10 charter clubs that kicked off in 1996 to 30 today.

How many games does each team play?

Each club plays 34 regular-season matches, with the 2026 season running from 21 February to 7 November. The schedule is unbalanced rather than a full home-and-away round robin against all 29 opponents, with more matches played against conference rivals than clubs in the other conference.

Does MLS have promotion and relegation?

No. Unlike most of the world’s top leagues, MLS has no promotion or relegation. Every one of the 30 clubs keeps its place for the following season regardless of where it finishes, and new clubs join only through the league’s separate expansion process rather than by being promoted from a lower division.

How do the MLS Cup Playoffs work?

Eighteen of the 30 clubs qualify for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, the nine highest-placed teams in each conference by regular-season points. The 8th and 9th seeds in each conference meet in a single wild-card game, and the winner joins seeds 2 through 7 in a best-of-three Round One. From the Conference Semifinals onward it’s single-elimination, with the higher seed hosting, through to the MLS Cup Final.

When does the 2026 MLS season start and end?

The regular season runs from 21 February to 7 November 2026. The MLS Cup Playoffs follow from 18 November, with the MLS Cup Final scheduled for 18 December 2026.

Who has won the most MLS Cups?

LA Galaxy have won the most MLS Cups, with six titles (2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2024). D.C. United are next with four (1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004), followed by Columbus Crew with three.

Who won the 2025 MLS Cup?

Inter Miami CF won their first MLS Cup in 2025, beating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1 in the final on 6 December 2025.

What’s the difference between the Eastern and Western Conferences?

MLS splits its 30 clubs into two 15-team conferences grouped roughly by geography. Each conference runs its own MLS Cup Playoffs bracket, and the two sides only meet when the Eastern and Western Conference champions face off in the MLS Cup Final.
