What is Liga BetPlay?
Liga BetPlay is the top tier of Colombian football, officially the Categoría Primera A and known as Liga BetPlay Dimayor because of its sponsor. Twenty clubs compete, and the season is split into two separate tournaments, each with its own champion.
The first professional tournament was played in 1948 and the competition is run by Dimayor. The Apertura and the Finalización became independent championships in 2002, and the current format, with 20 clubs playing both tournaments each year, was adopted in 2019.
Junior won the 2026 Apertura, beating Atlético Nacional 3-1 on aggregate in the final, after taking the 2025 Finalización. Atlético Nacional have the most titles in the league, with 18.
Jaguares de Córdoba and Cúcuta Deportivo came up for 2026, replacing Envigado and Unión Magdalena, and La Equidad were renamed Internacional de Bogotá.
How Liga BetPlay works
Two tournaments
The season is split into the Apertura and the Finalización. In each, every club plays every other club once, 19 matches each. The 2026 Apertura ran from January to June and the Finalización began in July. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Knockout stage
The top eight clubs in each tournament reach the playoffs. In the Apertura they play knockout rounds, with the final over two legs. In the Finalización the eight are drawn into two groups of four, and the two group winners meet in the final.
Relegation
A separate table averages points per match over the last three seasons, covering the Apertura and Finalización of 2024, 2025 and 2026. The bottom two clubs drop to Torneo DIMAYOR.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, away goals conceded, then fewer yellow cards, fewer red cards and finally a draw of lots.

The story so far
Colombian football turned professional in 1948, when ten clubs signed up for the first professional tournament. From 1949 to 1954 the period known as El Dorado saw clubs sign foreign stars after Dimayor broke away from the national federation, and Millonarios won consecutive titles.
In 1968 the league replaced its single yearly tournament with two shorter ones, and in 2002 the Apertura and Finalización became independent championships. No champion was awarded in 1989 after referee Álvaro Ortega was assassinated in Medellín and the remaining games were cancelled.
