What is EFL League Two?
EFL League Two is the fourth tier of English football and the lowest division of the English Football League. It is contested by 24 clubs from August to May, and the top three are promoted automatically.
The division took its current name in 2004/05, when the Football League renamed the old Third Division as League Two. Before that, the fourth tier was known as Division Three (1992 to 2004) and Division Four (1958 to 1992).
Bromley won the title in 2025/26, following Doncaster Rovers in 2024/25 and Stockport County in 2023/24. Chesterfield and Swindon Town have won it twice each since 2004.
For 2026/27, Rochdale and York City have come up from the National League, while Exeter City, Northampton Town, Port Vale and Rotherham United have dropped down from League One. Barrow and Harrogate Town went the other way, relegated to the National League.
How EFL League Two works
Season structure
24 clubs play each other home and away, 46 matches each and 552 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 15 August 2026 and finishes in May 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Promotion
The top three clubs are promoted automatically to League One. The clubs finishing fourth to seventh enter the play-offs, with two-legged semi-finals and a final at Wembley, to decide a fourth promotion place.
Relegation
The bottom two clubs are relegated to the National League.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results, then wins and away goals.
