What is the Bundesliga?
The Bundesliga is the top tier of German football, contested by 18 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 34 matches, home and away, and the bottom two are relegated automatically to 2. Bundesliga, with the 16th-placed side facing a two-legged relegation/promotion play-off for the final say.
It was formed in 1963, when the German Football Association merged the champions of the country’s best regional leagues into a single professional national division for the first time. 1. FC Cologne won that inaugural 1963/64 season.
Only 13 different clubs have won the Bundesliga across its 63 seasons. Bayern Munich have been champions 34 times, including 11 in a row between 2012/13 and 2022/23, a run broken only by Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten 2023/24 title. Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach have 5 titles each, the next best, with Werder Bremen on 4.
Bayern Munich head into 2026/27 as defending champions after winning a 34th title in 2025/26 while setting a new club scoring record. Schalke 04, SV 07 Elversberg and SC Paderborn 07 have been promoted for this season, replacing VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli, and the delayed 28 August start reflects the rescheduled calendar around the 2026 World Cup.

Season structure
18 clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each and 306 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 28 August 2026 and finishes on 22 May 2027, with a winter break from mid-December to 8 January.

Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results between the clubs concerned.

The story so far
Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach traded titles through the Bundesliga’s first golden age. Bayern, built around Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller, won three in a row from 1971/72, while Gladbach answered with three of their own from 1974/75 under Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattek. Between them, the two clubs won 11 of the league’s first 14 titles.
Hamburger SV and VfB Stuttgart broke through in the early 1980s, and Bayern’s grip loosened further in the 1990s and 2000s as Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund and 1. FC Kaiserslautern all won titles, with newly promoted Kaiserslautern’s 1997/98 triumph still the only time a promoted club has won the Bundesliga. VfL Wolfsburg’s surprise 2008/09 title, driven by Edin Dzeko and Grafite, remains their only championship.
Bayern have dominated the modern era, winning 11 straight titles between 2012/13 and 2022/23 under a run of coaches from Jupp Heynckes to Julian Nagelsmann. Bayer Leverkusen finally ended that streak in 2023/24, going the whole league season unbeaten under Xabi Alonso. Bayern reclaimed the title in 2024/25 and again in 2025/26, the latter while setting a new Bundesliga record of 122 goals in a season.
