What is the Premier League?

The Premier League is the top tier of English football, contested by 20 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 38 matches, home and away, and the bottom three are relegated to the Championship.

It began in 1992, when the clubs of the old First Division broke away from the Football League to form their own competition and negotiate their own broadcasting deals. The first season, 1992/93, had 22 clubs. The league was cut to 20 from 1995/96, and Manchester United won the first title.

Only seven clubs have won it in 34 seasons: Manchester United (13), Manchester City (8), Chelsea (5), Arsenal (4), Liverpool (2), Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City. Leicester’s 2015/16 triumph is widely regarded as one of the biggest surprises in sport, and Arsenal’s unbeaten 2003/04 side remains the only team to go through a Premier League season without a defeat.

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the title in 2025/26, finishing on 85 points, seven clear of Manchester City. For 2026/27, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City have replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

How the Premier League works

Season structure

20 clubs play each other home and away, 38 matches each and 380 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 21 August 2026 and finishes on 30 May 2027.

Promotion and relegation

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the EFL Championship. The top two Championship clubs are promoted automatically, and a third comes up through the play-offs.

European qualification

The top four qualify for the Champions League, with a fifth place available through UEFA’s European Performance Spot. The next-best finisher and the FA Cup winner enter the Europa League, and the Carabao Cup winner gets a Conference League place. Unused cup places pass down the table.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results between the clubs concerned.

The story so far

The Premier League opened in August 1992 with a Manchester United side that would go on to dominate the first two decades. Alex Ferguson’s team won 13 of the first 21 titles, with Blackburn Rovers’ 1994/95 win and Arsenal’s doubles under Arsene Wenger the main interruptions. Arsenal’s 2003/04 team went a whole season unbeaten and became known as the Invincibles.

Chelsea broke the pattern in 2004/05 under Jose Mourinho, winning back-to-back titles with 95 points in the first of them. Manchester City then changed the league’s balance of power. Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time goal on the final day of 2011/12 won City their first Premier League title, and Pep Guardiola’s side later reached 100 points in 2017/18 and won four in a row between 2020/21 and 2023/24, a first in English top-flight history.

Leicester City’s 2015/16 title remains the biggest shock of the era. Liverpool ended a 30-year wait for a league title in 2019/20 and added another in 2024/25, before Arsenal ended their own 22-year drought in 2025/26.

Premier League FAQs

How many teams are in the Premier League?

There are 20 teams in the Premier League. The 2026/27 line-up includes three newly promoted clubs, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City, who replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The league had 22 clubs in its first three seasons before it was cut to 20 for 1995/96.

How many games does each team play?

Each club plays 38 matches, 19 at home and 19 away, meeting every other club twice. That makes 380 matches per season. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 point and a defeat none.

How does relegation work?

The bottom three clubs in the final standings are relegated to the EFL Championship. Three clubs come up in their place: the top two from the Championship and the winner of the Championship play-offs. In 2025/26 Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United went down.

When does the Premier League season start and end?

The season runs from August to May. The 2026/27 season began on 21 August 2026 and finishes on 30 May 2027.

Who has won the most Premier League titles?

Manchester United have won the most, with 13 titles. Manchester City have 8, Chelsea 5, Arsenal 4, Liverpool 2, and Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City one each. Arsenal are the reigning champions after winning the 2025/26 title.

How many teams qualify for European competitions?

The top four qualify for the Champions League, and England can earn a fifth place through UEFA’s European Performance Spot, as it did for the 2026/27 competition. The next-best league finisher and the FA Cup winner go into the Europa League, and the Carabao Cup winner gets a Conference League place. If a cup winner has already qualified, the place passes down the league standings.

Which clubs were promoted to the Premier League for 2026/27?

Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. Coventry return after 25 years away, Hull after nine years, and Ipswich after just one season in the Championship.
