Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition, contested by 47 clubs from ten CONMEBOL associations.
What is the Copa Libertadores?
The Copa Libertadores is South America’s top club competition, organised by CONMEBOL since 1960 and named after the libertadores, the independence leaders of the early 19th century. It is the continent’s equivalent of the UEFA Champions League and carries the same prestige across Argentina, Brazil and the rest of South America.
The 2026 edition features 47 clubs from CONMEBOL’s ten member associations. Preliminary qualifying rounds trim the field to 32, who are drawn into eight groups of four. Each club plays the others in its group once home and once away, and the top two in every group advance to a straight knockout: Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a single-match final at a pre-selected neutral venue.
Independiente of Argentina are the most successful club in the competition’s history with seven titles, all won between 1964 and 1984. Flamengo are the defending champions, having beaten Palmeiras 1-0 in the 2025 final in Lima for their fourth title overall.
For 2026, the competition has reached the semifinals. Both finalists from the 2025 decider, Flamengo and Palmeiras, are back in the final four, alongside Fluminense (2023 champions) and Estudiantes de la Plata, who are chasing a fifth title after their last in 2009.

Qualifying rounds
Clubs from the lower-ranked CONMEBOL associations, plus teams that miss direct entry in the bigger leagues, play two preliminary rounds in January and February. The four winners join 28 direct entrants to complete the 32-club group stage.
Group stage
32 clubs are drawn into eight groups of four. Each club plays the other three in its group home and away, six matches each, running from around April to September. The top two in every group go through.
Knockout stage
From the Round of 16 onward it’s a straight two-legged knockout. CONMEBOL doesn’t use extra time or the away-goals rule in these rounds: a tie level on aggregate after both legs goes directly to a penalty shootout.
The final
Since 2019 the final has been a single match at a neutral venue chosen in advance, with 30 minutes of extra time and penalties if needed. The 2026 final is on 28 November at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The story so far
Argentine and Brazilian clubs have dominated the Copa Libertadores since it began in 1960, when Uruguay’s Peñarol won the inaugural edition. Independiente’s run of five titles in seven years through the 1970s (1972-1975 plus 1964, 1965 and 1984) remains the competition’s most dominant stretch by a single club.
The final moved from a two-legged tie to a single match at a neutral venue in 2019, the same year Flamengo won their second title with a dramatic late comeback against River Plate in Lima. Brazilian clubs have won six of the last seven editions: Flamengo (2019, 2022, 2025), Palmeiras (2020, 2021) and Fluminense (2023), interrupted only by Argentina’s Boca-River-adjacent finalists and Botafogo’s breakthrough win in 2024.
Flamengo go into the 2026 semifinals as defending champions and will face Estudiantes de la Plata’s toughest test yet, while the Palmeiras-Fluminense tie is a rematch between two of Brazil’s most consistent recent performers in the competition.
