What is the Super Lig?

The Super Lig is the top tier of Turkish football, contested by 18 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 34 matches, home and away, and the bottom three are relegated to the TFF 1. Lig.

The league was established on 21 February 1959, making it one of the older top-flight competitions in European football. Only six clubs have ever been crowned champions: Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş have shared almost every title between them, with Trabzonspor breaking their hold seven times from the Black Sea coast, and single titles for Bursaspor (2009/10) and İstanbul Başakşehir (2019/20).

Galatasaray are the dominant force of the modern era. Their 2025/26 title, a 26th overall, was their fourth in a row, following on from 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 – the last side to interrupt a Galatasaray run of that length was Trabzonspor, champions in 2021/22.

Three clubs came up for 2026/27: Erzurumspor FK, back after five seasons away, and first-timers Amed Sportif Faaliyetler and Çorum FK, who replaced Antalyaspor, Kayserispor and Fatih Karagümrük. The season began on 14 August 2026 and is scheduled to finish on 23 May 2027.

How the Super Lig works

Season structure

18 clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each and 306 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 14 August 2026 and is scheduled to finish on 23 May 2027.

Promotion and relegation

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the TFF 1. Lig. They are replaced by the top two clubs from the 1. Lig, plus the winner of a play-off between the clubs finishing third to seventh in that division.

The top two finishers go into the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. Third place and the Turkish Cup winner enter the UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round – if the Cup winner has already qualified through the league, the place passes to fourth.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated first by head-to-head record, then by goal difference, then by goals scored.

The story so far

Since the league’s formation in 1959, the title has come down to a contest between Istanbul’s big two: Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, with Beşiktaş the closest challenger and Trabzonspor the only side outside Istanbul to regularly break through. Between them, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş have won 61 of the 68 Super Lig titles awarded since 1959.

Trabzonspor’s five titles in the 1970s and early 1980s remain the biggest interruption to Istanbul’s grip on the league, and their 2021/22 championship under Abdullah Avcı, the club’s first in nearly four decades, is still their most recent. İstanbul Başakşehir’s surprise 2019/20 title and Bursaspor’s 2009/10 win are the only other exceptions to the Big Three’s dominance in the Super Lig era.

Galatasaray have been the league’s dominant force since 2022/23, winning four titles in a row through 2025/26 to take their all-time total to 26, extending their lead as the competition’s most successful club.
