What is the Africa Cup of Nations?

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the biennial international football championship for CAF’s national teams, organised by the Confederation of African Football since the first edition in 1957, when Egypt won a three-team tournament also featuring Sudan and Ethiopia. It has since grown into one of the world’s most-watched international competitions, spanning the whole of the African continent.

The 2025 edition, hosted by Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026, featured 24 national teams drawn into six groups of four. Each side played the other three in its group once, and the top two in every group, plus the four best third-placed teams, advanced to a 16-team knockout stage: Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place match and a single-match final.

Egypt are the competition’s most successful side by a wide margin, with seven titles, most recently in 2010. Host nation Morocco reached the 2025 final against Senegal, though the tournament’s outcome was ultimately decided off the pitch — see the Final section below for a full, neutral account of what happened and the ongoing CAS appeal.

CAF has already confirmed the next edition: AFCON 2027 will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and will expand to 28 teams across seven groups of four, the tournament’s largest field yet.

Pape Gueye scored for Senegal in the 94th minute. During the second half, a refereeing decision triggered a protest and Senegal’s players left the pitch before the match could be completed.

Morocco were awarded the title by a CAF Appeal Board ruling on 17 March 2026, which credited Morocco with a 3-0 forfeit win after ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match by leaving the pitch. Senegal formally appealed that ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on 25 March 2026. As of publication, no CAS decision has been confirmed and the outcome remains under active dispute.

How the Africa Cup of Nations works

Qualifying

CAF Cup of Nations qualifiers run over roughly 18 months before the tournament, with the host nation(s) exempt from qualifying. 24 of CAF’s member federations reached the 2025 finals in Morocco; from 2027, that expands to 28 teams as co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda join a larger field.

Group stage

24 teams (28 from 2027) are drawn into six groups of four (seven groups of four from 2027). Each side plays the other three in its group once, and the top two in every group advance automatically, joined by the four best third-placed teams to complete a 16-team knockout stage.

Knockout stage

From the Round of 16 onward it’s a single-match knockout. A match level after 90 minutes goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and to a penalty shootout if still level. The two semifinal losers also play a third-place match.

The final

The final is a single match at a neutral venue within the host country. The 2025 final was played on 18 January 2026 at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco — see the Final section above for how that match’s result was ultimately decided.

The story so far

Egypt have won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times, most recently in 2010, and remain the tournament’s most successful side by some distance.

Morocco hosted the 2025 edition and reached the final, where Senegal led 1-0 after extra time (Pape Gueye, 94′) before Senegal’s players left the pitch during a second-half refereeing protest. CAF’s Appeal Board ruled on 17 March 2026 that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarded Morocco the title by a 3-0 forfeit scoreline. Senegal formally appealed that ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on 25 March 2026; as of publication no CAS decision has been confirmed, and the outcome remains under active dispute — see the Final section above for the full picture.

CAF has already confirmed the next edition: AFCON 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, expanding the field to 28 teams across seven groups for the first time.

Africa Cup of Nations FAQs

How many teams played at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations?

24 national teams competed at the 2025 tournament in Morocco, drawn into six groups of four. The next edition, AFCON 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, expands to 28 teams across seven groups.

How is the AFCON group stage structured?

Each of the six groups plays a single round robin (three matches per team). The top two in every group advance automatically, and they’re joined by the four best third-placed teams to make up the 16-team knockout bracket.

Who won AFCON 2025?

This is genuinely disputed. On the pitch, Senegal led Morocco 1-0 after extra time in the final (Pape Gueye, 94th minute) before Senegal’s players left the pitch during a second-half refereeing protest. CAF’s Appeal Board ruled on 17 March 2026 that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarded Morocco the title by a 3-0 forfeit scoreline. Senegal appealed that ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on 25 March 2026, and as of publication no CAS decision has been confirmed, so the outcome remains under active dispute.

Who has the most Africa Cup of Nations titles all-time?

Egypt lead with seven titles, most recently in 2010. Cameroon have five, and Ghana and Nigeria have three each (totals prior to the disputed 2025 final).

Who won the Golden Boot at AFCON 2025?

Morocco’s Brahim Díaz finished as top scorer with 5 goals, CAF’s official Golden Boot winner for the tournament.

When and where is the next Africa Cup of Nations?

AFCON 2027 will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. CAF announced in July 2026 that the tournament will expand from 24 to 28 teams, split into seven groups of four.

What happens if an AFCON knockout match is level after extra time?

It goes straight to a penalty shootout. At the 2025 tournament, one of the eight Round of 16 ties, one semifinal and the third-place match were each decided on penalties.
