What is Indian Super League?
The Indian Super League (ISL) is the top tier of Indian football. For 2026/27 it is contested by 13 clubs, with matches from October 2026, and the top six after the league phase go into the play-offs.
The ISL launched in 2014 with eight franchise clubs. The AFC approved a roadmap for it to become India’s top division in 2019, and since 2022/23 it has been the only top-tier league, with the I-League below it.
East Bengal are the reigning champions after winning the 2025/26 title. Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the two before that, in 2023/24 and 2024/25.
For 2026/27, Churchill Brothers have joined after taking over the licence of Jamshedpur, who withdrew. Mohammedan went down in 2025/26, the first season in which the ISL applied relegation.
How Indian Super League works
Season structure
13 clubs play each other home and away, 24 league matches each and 156 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 10 October 2026 and runs into 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Play-offs
The top six clubs qualify. The top two go straight into two-legged semi-finals, while third to sixth play single-leg knockouts hosted by the higher-ranked side. The winners join the top two in the semi-finals, and the final is a single leg hosted by the higher-ranked finalist.
Asian places
The league’s top side takes a place in the AFC Challenge League preliminary round, a new slot this season. If that club is not eligible for AFC competitions, the slot passes to the next eligible side.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference and head-to-head goals scored. Fair-play ranking and a draw of lots come last.

The story so far
The ISL was announced in October 2013 by IMG-Reliance, Star Sports and the All India Football Federation. It kicked off on 12 October 2014 with Atlético de Kolkata beating Mumbai City 3-0, and Atlético went on to win the first title. The league grew from eight to ten clubs and a five-month season from 2017/18.
How the champion is decided has changed over the years. The ISL Cup play-off winner took the title until 2021/22, and from 2022/23 to 2024/25 the champion was the League Shield winner, the club top of the league phase. Mohun Bagan SG and Mumbai City are the only clubs to have won both the Cup and the Shield in the same season, in 2024/25 and 2020/21.
Punjab FC became the first club promoted from the I-League in 2023/24. Hyderabad FC moved to Delhi and became Sporting Club Delhi in October 2025, and relegation was applied for the first time in 2025/26, sending Mohammedan down.
