What is the Belgian Pro League?
The Belgian Pro League is the top tier of Belgian football. From 2026/27 it is contested by 18 clubs, up from 16, who play each other home and away from August to May. The play-offs used since 2009/10 have been dropped, so the champion is simply the club with the most points after 34 matches.
The competition was created in 1895 by the Royal Belgian Football Association. The first season was played in 1895/96 and won by FC Liégeois. Anderlecht have won the most titles, 34, ahead of Club Brugge, Union Saint-Gilloise and Standard Liège.
Club Brugge won the 2025/26 title. They have dominated recent years, winning six of the ten titles since 2016/17, with Anderlecht, Genk, Antwerp and Union Saint-Gilloise taking the others.
For 2026/27, SK Beveren and KV Kortrijk have come up from the Challenger Pro League as its champions and runners-up, and Lommel SK won promotion through a play-off against Dender.
How the Belgian Pro League works
Season structure
18 clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each and 306 in total, with no play-offs. The 2026/27 season began on 7 August 2026 and finishes in May 2027.
Relegation
The bottom two clubs are relegated directly to the Challenger Pro League, and clubs coming up from it take their places.
European qualification
The top finishers qualify for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The number of places and the qualifying round each club enters depend on Belgium’s UEFA coefficient ranking, so they can change from year to year.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by matches won, then goal difference, then goals scored.

The story so far
The league was reorganised many times in its early decades, including a two-league format in the early 1900s and a promotion and relegation system from 1906, and play was suspended during both World Wars. Anderlecht dominated the 1960s, winning five titles in a row between 1963/64 and 1967/68.
A play-off round after the regular season was introduced in 2009/10, with Anderlecht the first champions under it. It is gone for 2026/27, when the league returns to a straight 18-club table. Union Saint-Gilloise finished second to Club Brugge in 2021/22 and won the title in 2024/25, taking their total to 12.
