What is Serie C?
Serie C is the third tier of Italian football, run by Lega Pro (Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico). Sixty clubs are split into three geographic groups of twenty: Group A in the north, Group B in the centre and Group C in the south.
The league took the name Serie C at the start of 1935/36, was split into Serie C1 and Serie C2 in 1978, became the Lega Pro Divisione Unica in 2014 and returned to the Serie C name in 2017.
Vicenza won Group A in 2025/26, Arezzo won Group B and Benevento won Group C. For 2026/27, Bari, Reggiana, Spezia and Pescara have dropped down from Serie B, and nine clubs have come up from Serie D: Vado, Folgore Caratese, Treviso, Desenzano, Grosseto, Ostia Mare, Scafatese, Barletta and Savoia.
Three of the clubs are second teams of Serie A sides: Juventus Next Gen in Group A, Atalanta U23 in Group B and Inter U23 in Group C.
How Serie C works
Season structure
Each group has 20 clubs who play each other home and away, 38 matches each. The 2026/27 regular season runs from 21 August 2026 to 25 April 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Promotion
The winner of each of the three groups is promoted to Serie B and qualifies for the Supercoppa di Serie C. A fourth promotion place goes to the winner of the play-offs, which involve the clubs finishing 2nd to 5th in each group.
Relegation
Nine clubs drop to Serie D each season, three per group. The last-placed club in each group goes down directly, and play-outs, which include the 16th-placed club, decide the other relegation places.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, overall goal difference, goals scored, fewest goals conceded, wins, fewest defeats, away wins and fewest home defeats. Head-to-head criteria apply only after all matches between the clubs have been played.

The story so far
A third tier above the regional leagues was created in 1926 and was named Serie C at the start of 1935/36. A single national division formed in 1952/53, and Bruno Zauli’s reform of 1959 set up the structure of Serie C and Serie D as semi-professional divisions.
In 1978 Serie C was split into Serie C1 and Serie C2. The league took the name Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico on 20 June 2008, Lega Pro Prima and Seconda Divisione merged into a single Lega Pro Divisione Unica in 2014, and the Serie C name returned in May 2017.
