What is the Brazilian Serie A (Brasileirão)?
The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, known as the Brasileirão, is Brazil’s top football division, run by the CBF (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol). Since 2006 it has used a fixed 20-club, double round-robin format: every club plays 38 matches, home and away, over a single calendar-year season that typically runs from around late March to early December, rather than the split-year format used in most of Europe.
Brazil’s oldest football competitions were regional state championships, such as the Campeonato Paulista and Campeonato Carioca, and for decades there was no single recognised national champion. The Taça Brasil (1959-68) and the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa (1967-70) preceded the modern Campeonato Brasileiro, which began in 1971. In 2010 the CBF retroactively recognised the winners of those earlier tournaments as Brazilian champions, which is why some clubs’ official title counts reach back before 1971.
Palmeiras are the competition’s most decorated club, with 12 championships by the CBF’s official count. Santos and Flamengo have 8 titles each, and Corinthians 7. Flamengo go into 2026 as the reigning champions after their 2025 triumph, their eighth Brasileirão title.
For 2026, the four clubs relegated after the 2025 season — Ceará, Fortaleza, Juventude and Sport — were replaced by four sides promoted from Série B: Coritiba, CA Paranaense, Chapecoense and Clube do Remo, all back in the Brasileirão this season.

Season structure
20 clubs play every other club home and away across 38 rounds, 380 matches in total. The Brasileirão runs on a calendar-year basis rather than being split across two years; the 2025 season ran from late March to early December, and 2026 follows a similar shape.
Promotion and relegation
The four clubs that finish 17th to 20th are relegated to Série B for the following season. They are replaced by four clubs promoted from Série B — Coritiba, CA Paranaense, Chapecoense and Clube do Remo came up for 2026.
Continental qualification
The top five finishers qualify directly for the Copa Libertadores group stage. The Copa do Brasil champions and runners-up also earn Libertadores places, typically entering at an earlier stage, for up to seven Brazilian clubs in the competition. The next six best-placed clubs not already through, roughly positions six to eleven, qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated first by number of wins, then goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results between the clubs concerned, and finally by disciplinary record.

The story so far
Brazil’s national championship did not take its modern shape until 1971, decades after the state championships that still shape much of the domestic calendar. The CBF’s 2010 decision to retroactively recognise the Taça Brasil (1959-68) and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa (1967-70) as national titles reshaped the all-time honours list, and is the main reason Palmeiras’ count of 12 is sometimes debated by fans of Santos and Corinthians, who won heavily during that earlier era.
The competition settled into its current 20-club, single-table format in 2006. Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Palmeiras and Flamengo have each won more than one title since then, with Palmeiras’ back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023 and Flamengo’s 2019, 2020 and 2025 titles standing out as the clearest recent periods of dominance. Fluminense’s sole Brasileirão title in this era came in 2010, and Botafogo’s 2024 win was their first since 1995.
That 2024 title was one of the competition’s most talked-about recent storylines. Flamengo responded by reclaiming the championship in 2025, their eighth overall, and go into the 2026 season looking to defend it.

How many teams are in the Brazilian Serie A?
There are 20 teams in the Brazilian Serie A (Brasileirão). The competition has used this 20-club, single-table format every year since 2006; before that the number of clubs and the format varied from season to season.
How many games does each team play?
Each club plays 38 matches in a double round-robin, 19 at home and 19 away, meeting every other club twice. That makes 380 matches across the season. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point and a defeat none.
How does relegation work in the Brasileirão?
The four clubs that finish 17th to 20th are relegated to Série B for the following season. They are replaced by four clubs promoted from Série B — for the 2026 season that was Coritiba, CA Paranaense (Athletico Paranaense), Chapecoense and Clube do Remo, all returning to the top flight.
When does the Brasileirão season run?
Unlike Europe’s split-year leagues, the Brasileirão is a single calendar-year competition. The 2025 season ran from 29 March to 7 December, and recent seasons have followed a similar March-to-December shape.
Who has won the most Brasileirão titles?
Palmeiras are the competition’s most successful club, with 12 championships by the CBF’s official count. That total includes titles retroactively recognised in 2010 from the pre-1971 Taça Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa era, which is a point of some debate among fans — on a strictly post-1971, single-table basis the picture between Palmeiras, Santos and Corinthians is closer, but Palmeiras are widely regarded as among the most successful clubs in Brazilian football either way.
Which teams qualify for the Copa Libertadores from the Brasileirão?
The top five clubs in the final standings qualify directly for the Copa Libertadores group stage. The Copa do Brasil champions and runners-up also earn Libertadores places, typically entering at an earlier stage, giving Brazil up to seven representatives in total.
Which teams qualify for the Copa Sudamericana?
The next six best-placed clubs not already qualified for the Libertadores, generally positions six to eleven in the final standings, go into the following year’s Copa Sudamericana.
Who is the reigning Brasileirão champion?
CR Flamengo RJ are the reigning champions, having won the 2025 Brasileirão — their eighth Brazilian Serie A title.
