Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about Liga Portugal, known as the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football, played by 18 clubs from August to May.
What is Liga Portugal (Primeira Liga)?
Liga Portugal, officially the Primeira Liga, is the top tier of Portuguese football. Eighteen clubs play each other home and away across a 34-match season, and the league has used this 18-club, single round-robin format since the 2014-15 season. The bottom three clubs are relegated to Liga Portugal 2, with the top three non-reserve clubs from that division coming up in their place.
The competition dates back to 1934. In more than 90 seasons of football, it has been dominated by three clubs, Portugal’s so-called “Big Three”: Benfica are the record champions with 38 titles, Porto have won 31, and Sporting CP have won 21. Between them, they have won all but two of the league’s titles — Boavista (2000-01) and Belenenses (1945-46) are the only other champions in the competition’s history.
FC Porto are the defending champions, having won the 2025-26 title, their 31st overall, to reclaim the crown from Sporting CP, who had won the previous two seasons. Porto’s most dominant spell came between 1994-95 and 1998-99, when they won five titles in a row.
European qualification is tied to league position and the Taça de Portugal: the champions go straight into the UEFA Champions League group stage, the runner-up enters the Champions League play-off round, the cup winner (or third place if the cup winner already qualified via the league) goes into the Europa League, and fourth place enters Conference League qualifying.

The story so far
The Primeira Liga was founded in 1934 and has been contested by Portugal’s clubs ever since, but its history has been shaped almost entirely by three sides. FC Porto’s most dominant run came between 1994-95 and 1998-99, when they won five consecutive titles, a feat no club has since repeated.
Benfica went on their own tear through the 2010s, winning five titles in six seasons between 2013-14 and 2018-19, interrupted only by Porto’s 2017-18 triumph. Sporting CP won back-to-back titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25, having also been champions in 2020-21, before Porto reclaimed the crown in 2025-26 for their 31st championship overall.
Outside the Big Three, only Boavista (2000-01) and Belenenses (1945-46) have ever been crowned champions of Portugal, underlining just how tightly Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP have controlled the top of the table across more than nine decades of the competition.
