Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football, played by 18 clubs across two short tournaments a year, the Apertura (July to December) and the Clausura (January to May).
What is Liga MX?
Liga MX is the top tier of Mexican football, contested by 18 clubs. Unlike most European leagues, it does not run a single season with one champion. Instead, the football year is split into two independent short tournaments, the Apertura and the Clausura, each with its own table, its own playoff and its own champion.
The league traces back to 1943, when Mexico’s top division was founded. It ran as a single annual season for decades before adopting the twice-yearly short-tournament format in the late 1990s, first known as the Invierno and Verano tournaments before being renamed Apertura and Clausura in the early 2000s.
Each tournament runs a 17-round regular season in which every club plays the others once, followed by the Liguilla: a knockout playoff for the top 8 clubs, played over two legs at the quarterfinal, semifinal and final stages. Winning the Liguilla is what makes a club Liga MX champion for that tournament, regardless of where it finished in the regular-season table.
Deportivo Toluca FC head into the current tournament as the two-time reigning champions, having won both the Clausura 2025 and the Apertura 2025. Club America remain the most decorated club in the competition’s history, with 14 or more titles. The table and fixtures below reflect the Apertura 2026, which kicked off in July 2026 and is around round 10 of its 17-round regular season as of publish, with Atlante FC back in the top flight after being promoted for this cycle.

Tournament structure
The football year is split into two short tournaments, the Apertura (July to December) and the Clausura (January to May). Each is a complete competition in its own right: 18 clubs, a 17-round regular season in which every club faces the others once, and its own champion. There is no combined annual table.
The Liguilla playoffs
The top 8 clubs from each tournament’s regular-season standings advance to the Liguilla. Ties are seeded 1 versus 8, 2 versus 7 and so on, and every round, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final, is played over two legs with the winner decided on aggregate score. The tournament champion is whoever wins the final, not necessarily the regular-season table topper.
Promotion and relegation
Liga MX suspended promotion and relegation with the second-tier Liga de Expansion MX in 2020 for financial reasons. Regulations call for it to return from the 2026/27 cycle, with Atlante FC already promoted back into the top flight for this season, though the standings table on this page does not mark a relegation zone while the full rollout is confirmed.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points in the regular-season table are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then the head-to-head record between the clubs concerned.

The story so far
Club America’s three-tournament run from Apertura 2023 through Clausura 2024 underlined why they are considered Liga MX’s benchmark club, taking their all-time title count to 14 or more, the most of any team in the league’s history. Toluca then ended a long wait of their own: their Clausura 2025 win, a 2-0 aggregate victory over America in the final, was their first title since 2010 and their 11th overall. They followed it up by winning the Apertura 2025 as well, their 12th title, to head into the current Apertura 2026 as back-to-back champions.
Before that recent stretch, Tigres UANL (Clausura 2023), Pachuca (Apertura 2022) and Atlas FC (Clausura 2022 and Apertura 2021) had all taken turns lifting the trophy, a reminder that Liga MX’s twice-yearly format tends to spread champions across a wider range of clubs than a single European-style season.

How many teams are in Liga MX?
There are 18 clubs in Liga MX for the 2026/27 cycle, including Atlante FC, who returned to the top flight this season. Each of the two annual tournaments, the Apertura and the Clausura, is contested by all 18 clubs.
How is the Liga MX season structured?
Unlike most European leagues, Liga MX does not run a single season with one champion. It splits the year into two independent short tournaments: the Apertura, which runs roughly from July to December, and the Clausura, from January to May. Each tournament has its own 17-round regular season and its own knockout playoff, so two champions are crowned every year.
What is the Liguilla?
The Liguilla is Liga MX’s playoff phase. The top 8 clubs from each tournament’s regular-season table qualify, seeded 1 through 8. Quarterfinals, semifinals and the final are all played over two legs, home and away, with the winner decided on aggregate score. The play-in round used in some earlier formats has been eliminated, so the top 8 go straight into the quarterfinals.
Which tournament is currently being played?
The table and fixtures on this page are for the Apertura 2026, the tournament that opened in July 2026 and runs into December 2026, based on the payload’s fixture dates around round 10 of the 17-round regular season.
Is there relegation in Liga MX?
Promotion and relegation between Liga MX and the second-tier Liga de Expansion MX was suspended in 2020 for financial reasons. Mexican football’s governing bodies have ruled for its return starting with the 2026/27 cycle, though the practical rollout is still being phased in, which is why this page does not mark a relegation zone in the standings table.
Who are the reigning Liga MX champions?
Deportivo Toluca FC won the Apertura 2025 title, their 12th Liga MX championship, having also won the previous tournament, the Clausura 2025, their 11th. That makes Toluca back-to-back champions across the two most recent tournaments.
Who has won the most Liga MX titles?
Club America is the most successful club in Liga MX history, with 14 or more championships since the league’s professional era began.
When was Liga MX founded?
The Mexican top flight was founded in 1943. It adopted its current twice-yearly Apertura/Clausura tournament format in the late 1990s, having previously run as a single annual season.
