What is the Egyptian Premier League?
The Egyptian Premier League is the top tier of Egyptian football, contested by 20 clubs from Cairo, Alexandria and across the country. It is the oldest and most prestigious league in Africa, and Al Ahly and Zamalek, the two Cairo giants who contest the Cairo Derby, have won 60 of its 67 titles between them.
The competition was founded on 22 October 1948, though several early seasons and two more recent ones, 2011/12 and 2012/13, were curtailed without a champion being crowned after the Port Said Stadium disaster of February 2012, in which more than 70 people died and Egyptian football was suspended for long stretches of the following two seasons.
Only seven clubs have ever won the title: Al Ahly (45), Zamalek (15), Ismaily (3), and one apiece for Tersana, Olympic Club, Ghazl El Mahalla and Al Mokawloon Al Arab – the last two of whom are still competing in the 2026/27 top flight. Al Ahly’s 45 titles account for roughly two-thirds of every championship ever awarded, a level of dominance without parallel among Africa’s major leagues; CAF has separately named Al Ahly its African Club of the Century.
Zamalek ended Al Ahly’s run of three straight titles by winning the 2025/26 championship, their 15th overall. For 2026/27 the league has switched to a new two-stage format for the first time: an opening single round-robin among all 20 clubs, followed by a Championship Group and a Relegation Group that decide the title and the drop separately.

Season structure (new for 2026/27)
All 20 clubs play a single round-robin first stage, 19 rounds and 190 matches, running from 21 August 2026 to around 20 February 2027. The table then splits: the top 6 enter a Championship Group and play a further 5 matches each (15 in total) to decide the title, while the bottom 14 form a Relegation Group and play a further 13 matches each (91 in total) to decide who goes down. The season is scheduled to finish in May 2027.
Promotion and relegation
Four clubs are relegated to the Egyptian Second Division at the end of the Relegation Group phase. Only three clubs are promoted in return, so the 2027/28 Egyptian Premier League is set to feature 19 clubs instead of 20.
Continental qualification
The champions and runners-up qualify for the CAF Champions League. The third-placed club in the Championship Group goes into the CAF Confederation Cup.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, in line with standard Egyptian Football Association regulations.

The story so far
Egyptian football has been a two-club story almost from the start. Al Ahly and Zamalek, both founded in Cairo in the early 20th century, have contested the Cairo Derby, one of the fiercest and most-watched rivalries in world football, for over a hundred years, and between them they have lifted 60 of the league’s 67 titles. Only Ismaily, with three championships either side of the 1960s and 1990s, has interrupted their duopoly more than once; Tersana, Olympic Club, Ghazl El Mahalla and Al Mokawloon Al Arab have one title apiece.
Al Ahly’s modern dominance has been extraordinary: they won nine of the twelve completed seasons between 2013/14 and 2024/25, including a run of four titles in a row from 2015/16 to 2018/19, and CAF has named them its African Club of the Century for that sustained success in both Egyptian and continental football. Zamalek’s 2025/26 title, their 15th, ended a run of three straight Al Ahly championships and set up the new two-stage 2026/27 season with both Cairo giants again among the favourites.
The league’s history has not been without disruption. The Port Said Stadium disaster of February 2012, one of the deadliest incidents in football history, led to matches being suspended and the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons being curtailed without champions, a reminder of how closely football and wider events have been intertwined in Egypt.

Zed FCEgyptian Premier League FAQs
How many teams are in the Egyptian Premier League?
There are 20 teams in the Egyptian Premier League for 2026/27. For the first time, the season is split into two stages: an opening round-robin among all 20 clubs, followed by a six-team Championship Group and a fourteen-team Relegation Group.
How many games does each team play?
Every club plays 19 matches in the first stage, one against each other club. After the split, the six Championship Group clubs play a further 5 matches each (24 in total for the season), while the fourteen Relegation Group clubs play a further 13 matches each (32 in total for the season).
How does the new two-stage format work?
It’s new for 2026/27. All 20 clubs play a single round-robin first stage (190 matches). The top 6 then move into a Championship Group to decide the title, and the bottom 14 form a Relegation Group to decide who goes down, with both groups playing out the rest of the season separately.
When does the Egyptian Premier League season start and end?
The 2026/27 season began on 21 August 2026. The first stage runs to around 20 February 2027, before the Championship and Relegation Groups play out through to a scheduled finish in May 2027.
Who has won the most Egyptian Premier League titles?
Al Ahly have won the most by a wide margin, with 45 titles, more than any other club in Egyptian or African football history. Zamalek are next with 15, and only five other clubs, Ismaily (3), Tersana, Olympic Club, Ghazl El Mahalla and Al Mokawloon Al Arab (1 each), have ever been champions.
How many teams are relegated from the Egyptian Premier League?
Four clubs go down to the Egyptian Second Division at the end of the Relegation Group phase. Only three teams come up in their place, so the 2027/28 Egyptian Premier League is set to have 19 clubs rather than 20.
What is the Cairo Derby?
The Cairo Derby is the match between Al Ahly and Zamalek, Egypt’s two most successful and most-supported clubs. It is one of the oldest and most fiercely contested rivalries in African and world football, and the two clubs have won 60 of the 67 Egyptian Premier League titles awarded to date.
