Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about the Copa Sudamericana, CONMEBOL’s second-tier continental club competition, contested by 56 clubs from across South America.
What is the Copa Sudamericana?
The Copa Sudamericana is CONMEBOL’s second-tier continental club competition, sitting directly below the Copa Libertadores in South America’s football pyramid. Founded in 2002, it gives clubs a parallel route to continental silverware — and its winner earns a place in the following year’s Copa Libertadores group stage, the competition covered on our sister page.
The 2026 edition draws 56 clubs from across CONMEBOL into the competition once qualifying is included. After preliminary qualifying rounds, 32 clubs reach the group stage, drawn into eight groups of four. Each club plays the others in its group once at home and once away, and the top two in every group advance to a straight knockout: Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a single-match final at a pre-selected neutral venue.
No club has won the Copa Sudamericana more than twice. Six clubs share the record with two titles each: Boca Juniors, Independiente, Lanús, Athletico Paranaense, Independiente del Valle and LDU Quito. Lanús are the defending champions, beating Atlético Mineiro 0-0 (5-4 on penalties) in the 2025 final on 22 November 2025 for their second title.
For 2026, the competition has reached the semifinals. The group stage, Round of 16 and quarterfinals are all complete, with Boca Juniors facing CR Vasco da Gama RJ and Atlético Mineiro meeting Montevideo City Torque for a place in the final on 21 November at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Qualifying
A wide qualifying phase whittles CONMEBOL’s clubs down to the group-stage field. Clubs that finish third in their Copa Libertadores group also drop into the Copa Sudamericana’s knockout rounds, giving the competition a broader entry list than the group stage alone suggests — 56 clubs took part across the full 2026 edition.
Group stage
32 clubs are drawn into eight groups of four. Each club plays the other three in its group home and away, six matches each. The top two in every group advance to the knockout stage.
Knockout stage
From the Round of 16 onward it’s a straight two-legged knockout, the same as the Copa Libertadores: no extra time or the away-goals rule across these rounds — a tie level on aggregate after both legs goes directly to a penalty shootout.
The final
Since 2019 the final has been a single match at a neutral venue chosen in advance, with 30 minutes of extra time and penalties if needed. The 2026 final is on 21 November at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, Colombia. The winner earns a place in the following year’s Copa Libertadores.

The story so far
Since its 2002 launch as CONMEBOL’s second-tier continental cup, the Copa Sudamericana has been notably open at the top: no club has managed more than two titles, and six different clubs — Boca Juniors, Independiente, Lanús, Athletico Paranaense, Independiente del Valle and LDU Quito — share the record.
Lanús added their second title in 2025, beating Atlético Mineiro 0-0 (5-4 on penalties) in the final on 22 November 2025. As champions, Lanús also earned a berth in the 2026 Copa Libertadores group stage.
For 2026, Atlético Mineiro are back in the semifinals looking to go one better after last year’s final defeat, facing Montevideo City Torque for a place in the 21 November final in Barranquilla. In the other semifinal, two-time champions Boca Juniors face CR Vasco da Gama RJ.
