What is Ligue 2?

Ligue 2 is the second tier of French football, contested by 18 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 34 matches, home and away, and the top two are promoted to Ligue 1.

The league began in 1933 as Division 2, a year after the first division was created, and was renamed Ligue 2 in 2002. The French league (LFP) voted in 2021 to cut it from 20 clubs to 18, which took effect for 2024/25.

Troyes won the title in 2025/26, their third, and went up to Ligue 1 with Le Mans. Le Havre hold the record with six titles, ahead of Nancy with five.

For 2026/27, Dijon and Sochaux have come up from the National, now called Ligue 3, while Metz and Nantes have dropped down from Ligue 1.

How Ligue 2 works

Season structure

18 clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each and 306 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 8 August 2026 and finishes on 22 May 2027.

Promotion

The top two clubs are promoted automatically to Ligue 1. Clubs in third to fifth place enter the play-offs: fifth plays fourth, the winner plays third, and that winner meets Ligue 1’s 16th-placed club over two legs for a place in the top flight.

Relegation

The bottom two clubs are relegated directly to Ligue 3. The 16th-placed club plays a two-legged play-off against the winner of Ligue 3’s promotion play-off, and the top two Ligue 3 clubs come up automatically.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head goal difference, then fair play points.

The story so far

Division 2 was created in 1933, and Red Star Saint-Ouen became its first champions by beating Olympique Alès 3-2 in a decider in 1934. A single table of 16 clubs was adopted for 1934/35, and after the Second World War the league mixed professional and amateur clubs.

Le Havre have won the title six times, in 1937/38, 1958/59, 1984/85, 1990/91, 2007/08 and 2022/23. Nancy have five, and Lille, Nice, Lens and Metz four each. The league was trimmed to 18 clubs in 2024/25, and it now sends two clubs straight up to Ligue 1 each season, with a third place decided through the play-offs.

Ligue 2 FAQs

How many teams are in Ligue 2?

There are 18 teams in Ligue 2, after the league was cut from 20 for the 2024/25 season. The 2026/27 line-up includes Dijon and Sochaux, promoted from Ligue 3, and Metz and Nantes, relegated from Ligue 1.

How many games does each team play?

Each club plays 34 matches, 17 at home and 17 away, meeting every other club twice. That makes 306 matches per season. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 point and a defeat none.

How does promotion to Ligue 1 work?

The bottom two clubs are relegated directly to Ligue 3. The 16th-placed club plays a two-legged play-off against the winner of Ligue 3’s promotion play-off, and the loser plays in Ligue 3 the following season.

When does the Ligue 2 season start and end?

Who has won the most Ligue 2 titles?
