What is Serie B?
Serie B is the second tier of Italian football, contested by 20 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 38 matches, home and away. The top two are promoted to Serie A, and a third place is decided by the promotion play-offs.
The single-group Serie B was established in 1929, with its first season in 1929/30. It had 22 clubs between 2004 and 2018, and has had 20 since 2019/20.
Venezia won the title in 2025/26 and went up to Serie A with Frosinone and Monza. Genoa and Atalanta share the record for most titles, with six each.
For 2026/27, Pisa, Hellas Verona and Cremonese have dropped down from Serie A, while Vicenza, Arezzo, Benevento and Ascoli have come up from Serie C. Pescara, Spezia, Reggiana and Bari were relegated to Serie C.
How Serie B works
Season structure
20 clubs play each other home and away, 38 matches each and 380 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 21 August 2026 and finishes on 14 May 2027.
Promotion
The top two clubs are promoted automatically to Serie A. Clubs in third to eighth place enter the promotion play-offs for the third place. If the gap between third and fourth is more than 14 points, no play-offs are held and third place is promoted directly.
Relegation
Clubs in 18th to 20th place are relegated directly to Serie C. The 16th and 17th-placed clubs meet in a two-legged play-out for a fourth relegation place. If 17th is more than five points behind 16th, no play-out is held and 17th is relegated.
Play-offs and play-outs
The play-offs run as a preliminary round, two-legged semi-finals and a final, with the higher-placed club hosting the second leg. If the aggregate is level, the higher-placed club advances, unless the two finished on equal points, in which case extra time and penalties decide it.

The story so far
Promotion and relegation between Italian divisions was introduced in 1912, and the Viareggio Charter of 1926 reorganised the lower leagues under the new Divisione Nazionale. The single-group Serie B was established in 1929, and Serie A and Serie B were run by the same league body until 2010, when Lega B took over the second tier.
The division expanded to 24 clubs in 2003/04 after the Catania case and settled at 22 from 2004 to 2018, before shrinking to 20 in 2019/20. Promotion play-offs were introduced in 2004/05, and VAR has been used across the whole regular season since 2021/22. Brescia hold the record for seasons in the league, with 66.

How many teams are in Serie B?
There are 20 teams in Serie B, a number the league has had since 2019/20. The 2026/27 line-up includes Pisa, Hellas Verona and Cremonese, relegated from Serie A, and Vicenza, Arezzo, Benevento and Ascoli, promoted from Serie C.
How many games does each team play?
Each club plays 38 matches, 19 at home and 19 away, meeting every other club twice. That makes 380 matches per season. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 point and a defeat none.
How does promotion to Serie A work?
The top two clubs are promoted automatically. The third promotion place is decided by play-offs involving the clubs in third to eighth place. If the gap between third and fourth is more than 14 points, there are no play-offs and the third-placed club goes up.
How does relegation work?
Clubs in 18th to 20th place are relegated directly to Serie C. A fourth place is decided by a two-legged play-out between the 16th and 17th-placed clubs, unless 17th is more than five points behind, in which case 17th is relegated directly.
When does the Serie B season start and end?
The season runs from August to May. The 2026/27 season began on 21 August 2026 and finishes on 14 May 2027.
Who has won the most Serie B titles?
Genoa and Atalanta have won the most, with six titles each. Palermo have five, and Bari and Brescia four each. Venezia are the reigning champions after winning the 2025/26 title.
