What is Indonesia Liga 1?
Indonesia Liga 1 is the top tier of Indonesian football, contested by 18 clubs each season from September to May. Officially the competition has been called the Super League since 2025 and is sponsored as the BRI Super League, but most fans, and most searches, still say Liga 1.
Every club plays 34 matches, home and away. The league grew out of Liga Indonesia, formed in 1994 when the Perserikatan and Galatama competitions merged, and it has run as a professional top flight since the Indonesia Super League began in 2008/09.
Persib Bandung are the reigning champions after winning the 2025/26 title, following their wins in 2023/24 and 2024/25. They have four titles since the league was relaunched in 2008.
For 2026/27, Garudayaksa, PSS Sleman and Isenmulang Kalteng have come up from the Championship, replacing Persis, Semen Padang and PSBS Biak. Two clubs have also moved and changed name: Adhyaksa Banten became Isenmulang Kalteng in Palangka Raya, and Malut United became Java United in Semarang.
How Indonesia Liga 1 works
Season structure
18 clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each and 306 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 4 September 2026 and runs to May 2027. The champions are the club with the most points after 34 matches, with 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
Continental places
The league winner qualifies for the AFC Champions League Two group stage, and the runner-up enters its play-off round.
Promotion and relegation
The bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship. Three clubs come up each year: the two Championship group winners and the winner of a play-off between the group runners-up.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference and goals scored, then overall goal difference and goals scored. Fair-play points and a draw of lots come last.

The story so far
The top flight dates to 1994, when the football association merged the amateur Perserikatan and the semi-professional Galatama into a single Liga Indonesia. The modern professional league began as the Indonesia Super League in 2008/09 with 18 clubs, and Ernest Jeremiah of Persipura scored its first goal in a 2-2 draw with Sriwijaya.
The 2010s were turbulent. A rival Indonesian Premier League ran from 2011 to 2013, and the Super League was restored as the sole top division in March 2013. Competition stopped in 2015 when the government banned the association’s activities, and FIFA lifted its one-year suspension of Indonesia in May 2016. The league was renamed Liga 1 in 2017, the 2020 season was cancelled because of COVID-19, a championship play-off was added in 2023/24, and the competition took the Super League name in 2025.
