What is EFL League One?
EFL League One is the third tier of English football, below the Premier League and the Championship. It is contested by 24 clubs from August to May, and the top two are promoted automatically.
The division took its current name in 2004/05, when the Football League renamed the old Second Division as League One. Before that, the third tier was known as Division Two (1992 to 2004), Division Three (1958 to 1992) and Division Three North and South.
Lincoln City won the title in 2025/26, following Birmingham City in 2024/25 and Portsmouth in 2023/24. Luton Town and Wigan Athletic have won it twice each since 2004.
For 2026/27, Bromley, Cambridge United, Milton Keynes Dons and Notts County have come up from League Two, while Leicester City, Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday have dropped down from the Championship.
How EFL League One works
Season structure
24 clubs play each other home and away, 46 matches each and 552 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 15 August 2026 and finishes in May 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Promotion
The top two clubs are promoted automatically to the Championship. The clubs finishing third to sixth enter the play-offs, with two-legged semi-finals and a final at Wembley, to decide a third promotion place.
Relegation
The bottom four clubs are relegated to League Two.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results, then wins and away goals.

The story so far
League One began in 2004/05, when the Football League renamed its Second Division. Luton Town won the first title, and 79 different clubs have played in the division since then.
Bury were expelled from the Football League in August 2019 over financial breaches and did not play in 2019/20, a season that was ended early because of COVID-19, with Coventry City named champions on points per game. Financial Fair Play rules, including a 60% wage-to-turnover cap, have applied in the Football League since 2012/13.
