What is National League?
The National League is the fifth tier of English football and the highest level outside the Football League. It is contested by 24 clubs from August to April, and the champions are promoted to League Two.
It began in 1979 as the Alliance Premier League and has also been known as the Football Conference. It has carried the name National League since 2015, and below it sit the National League North and National League South, which also have 24 clubs each.
York City won the title in 2025/26, following Barnet in 2024/25 and Chesterfield in 2023/24. Barnet have won it four times, more than any other club.
For 2026/27, AFC Fylde, Hornchurch, Kidderminster Harriers and Worthing have come up from the North and South divisions, while Barrow and Harrogate Town have dropped down from League Two.
How National League works
Season structure
24 clubs play each other home and away, 46 matches each and 552 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 8 August 2026 and finishes in April 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Promotion
The champions are promoted automatically to League Two. The clubs in second to seventh place enter the play-offs: second and third go straight into the semi-finals, while fourth plays seventh and fifth plays sixth in the qualifying round. The final winner takes a second promotion place.
Relegation
The bottom four clubs are relegated to the National League North or National League South, depending on location.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then matches won, then head-to-head results.

The story so far
The league was formed in 1979 by the leading Northern Premier League and Southern League clubs as the Alliance Premier League. Altrincham won the first title in 1979/80 but were not promoted, because there was no automatic promotion to the Football League until 1987. Lincoln City were the first club relegated under the new arrangement.
A second promotion place, decided by play-offs, was added in 2003, with Doncaster Rovers the first winners. The league was split into three divisions in 2004/05 with the creation of the North and South, the play-offs were expanded to six clubs in 2017, and the North and South grew to 24 clubs each in 2022/23.
