What is Scottish Championship?
The Scottish Championship is the second tier of Scottish football, below the Premiership. It is contested by 10 clubs from August to April, and every club plays the others four times.
The division was created in July 2013, when the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League merged to form the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). It is currently known as the William Hill Championship for sponsorship reasons.
St Johnstone won the title in 2025/26, following Falkirk in 2024/25 and Dundee United in 2023/24. Dundee, Dundee United and Hearts have each won it twice.
Livingston and Inverness Caledonian Thistle are the two clubs new to the division for 2026/27.
How Scottish Championship works
Season structure
10 clubs play each other four times, twice at home and twice away, 36 matches each and 180 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 1 August 2026 and finishes on 30 April 2027. A win earns 3 points and a draw 1.
Promotion
The champions are promoted directly to the Premiership. The clubs in second to fourth place enter the Premiership play-offs, played over two legs, for a chance to go up.
Relegation
The bottom club is relegated directly to League One. The ninth-placed club enters a two-legged play-off against a League One side for a place in the division.
Tiebreakers
Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored.

The story so far
The SPFL was formed in July 2013 by the merger of the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League, and the Championship became the second tier of the new pyramid. Hearts won the 2014/15 title with 91 points and 96 goals, both division records, including a 10-0 win over Cowdenbeath in February 2015.
Dundee United conceded only 23 goals when they won the 2023/24 title, the fewest in a season, while Brechin City’s four points in 2017/18 is the lowest total. The division’s record crowd of 50,349 watched Rangers draw 1-1 with Alloa Athletic on 23 April 2016.
