What is Segunda Division?

The Segunda Division, also called La Liga 2 and sponsored as LaLiga Hypermotion, is the second tier of Spanish football. It is contested by 22 clubs from August to June, and the top two are promoted automatically to La Liga.

The division was inaugurated in 1928/29 with 20 clubs in two groups. It was split into regional groups in 1934/35 and returned to a single group in 1968/69.

Racing Santander won the title in 2025/26, following Levante in 2024/25 and Leganés in 2023/24.

For 2026/27, Mallorca, Girona and Real Oviedo have dropped down from La Liga, while Tenerife, Eldense, Sabadell and Celta Fortuna have come up from the Primera Federación.

How Segunda Division works

Season structure

22 clubs play each other home and away, 42 matches each and 462 in total. The 2026/27 season began on 14 August 2026 and finishes in June 2027. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.

Promotion

The top two clubs are promoted automatically to La Liga. The clubs finishing third to sixth enter the promotion play-offs, with two-legged semi-finals and a final, to decide a third promotion place.

Relegation

The bottom four clubs are relegated to the Primera Federación.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated by head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference and goals scored. Fair-play points come last.

The story so far

The Segunda Division began in 1928/29 alongside La Liga. From 1977 to 1984 it was known as Second Division A, after a Second Division B was introduced as the third tier, and the competition was halted in March 2020 during the COVID-19 outbreak before finishing in July.

Commercial names arrived in 2006/07 with Liga BBVA, followed by Liga Adelante from 2008/09, LaLiga 1|2|3 in 2016/17, LaLiga SmartBank in 2019/20 and LaLiga Hypermotion in 2023/24. Deportivo La Coruña set the points record of 91 in 2011/12, and Elche in 2012/13 became the first team to lead the table on all 42 matchdays.
