What is Liga Profesional?
The Liga Profesional de Fútbol is the top tier of Argentine football, organised by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and sponsored as the Torneo Betano. Thirty clubs are split into two zones of fifteen for the Apertura and the Clausura, and each tournament crowns its own champion.
Argentina held its first championship in 1891, making it the first country outside the United Kingdom to establish a football league, and the league turned professional in 1931. The AFA launched the Liga Profesional de Fútbol in May 2020, and the division grew to 30 clubs in 2025.
Belgrano won the 2026 Apertura, beating River Plate 3-2 in the final in Córdoba on 24 May 2026 for their first national league title. In 2025, Platense won the Apertura, Estudiantes (La Plata) won the Clausura, and Rosario Central were awarded the Campeón de Liga title on the aggregate table.
Gimnasia y Esgrima (Mendoza) and Estudiantes (Río Cuarto) came up from the Primera Nacional for 2026.
How Liga Profesional works
Season structure
30 clubs are split into two zones of fifteen. In each tournament a club plays the other 14 clubs in its zone once, plus two interzonal matches, 16 matches in all. The Apertura ran from 22 January to 24 May 2026 and the Clausura runs from 23 July to 12 December. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat none.
Playoffs
The top eight in each zone reach a 16-team knockout phase. The round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are all single matches, with the higher seed at home except in the final, which is played at a neutral venue. Ties go to extra time and then penalties.
International places and relegation
The Apertura and Clausura winners and the Copa Argentina champion earn Copa Libertadores places, and the other Libertadores and Sudamericana places go to the best clubs on the aggregate table. In 2026 two clubs go down to the Primera Nacional: the bottom club on the aggregate table and the club with the lowest points average over 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Campeón de Liga and tiebreakers
The club with the most points on the aggregate table is named Campeón de Liga, a title created at the end of 2025. Within a zone, clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results and fair-play ranking, then a draw.

The story so far
The first championship was played in 1891 and professionalism arrived in 1931, when 18 clubs left the amateur leagues. For decades the title belonged to the Big Five of River Plate, Boca Juniors, Independiente, Racing and San Lorenzo, who were the only champions over a 36-year period.
The format has changed often. An averaging system for relegation was first used in 1957, the Metropolitano and Nacional tournaments replaced a single competition in 1967, a European-style season began in 1985, and three points for a win arrived in 1995/96. In 2020 no league championship was held and the AFA ran a Copa de la Liga instead.
