About Manchester United
Manchester United began life in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, a works team formed by railway workers in Manchester. The club took its current name in 1902 and moved into Old Trafford in 1910, where it has played ever since apart from a spell after the stadium was bombed in the Second World War.
The club’s modern identity was built by two managers. Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team after the war and led it to the 1968 European Cup, a decade after the Munich air disaster of 1958 claimed the lives of eight players. Sir Alex Ferguson, in charge from 1986 to 2013, then won 13 Premier League titles, and in 1998/99 his side became the first English club to win the league, FA Cup and European Cup in the same season.
United’s all-time records reflect that history. Wayne Rooney is the club’s record goalscorer with 253 goals, and Bobby Charlton holds the appearance record with 758. The club plays in red, with white and black as its other colours, and its nickname, the Red Devils, appears on the crest.
