About Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid were founded in 1903 as Athletic Club de Madrid, originally a branch of Athletic Club of Bilbao, before becoming an independent club. The red-and-white stripes were adopted from Athletic, and the club’s nickname, Los Colchoneros, the mattress makers, comes from the similarity of the stripes to old mattress covers.
The club played at the Vicente Calderón from 1966 to 2017 and then moved to the Metropolitano, a modern stadium in the east of the city. During the Diego Simeone era that began in 2011, Atlético won La Liga in 2013/14 and 2020/21, the Europa League in 2012 and 2018, and reached the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016.
Antoine Griezmann is the club’s record goalscorer and Koke holds the appearance record. Atlético play in red and white stripes with blue shorts, and their supporters are known for a loud and loyal atmosphere.
