About Athletic Club
Athletic Club were founded in 1898 in Bilbao and are famous for a policy of signing only players who were born or developed in the Basque Country and Navarre. The club’s red-and-white stripes and its home at San Mamés, known as La Catedral, make it one of the most distinctive in world football.
Athletic are one of only three clubs, with Barcelona and Real Madrid, never to have been relegated from La Liga since the competition began in 1929. They have won eight league titles, the last two in 1982/83 and 1983/84, and 24 Copa del Rey trophies, second only to Barcelona. Their nickname, Los Leones, comes from the old San Mamés ground, which stood by the Church of San Mamés, a saint associated with lions.
