About FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 by a group led by the Swiss businessman Joan Gamper. The club grew into a symbol of Catalan identity, and its motto, Més que un club, meaning more than a club, reflects that. It is owned and run by its members, known as socis.

Barcelona’s modern style was shaped by Johan Cruyff, first as a player and then as coach of the Dream Team that won the club’s first European Cup in 1992. That tradition of short passing and youth development at La Masia produced a generation of home-grown stars, and the side that won the Champions League in 2009 and 2011 under Pep Guardiola is regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

Lionel Messi is the club’s record goalscorer with 672 goals and its record appearance maker with 778 matches. Barcelona play in blue and garnet stripes at Camp Nou, which is being redeveloped into one of the largest stadiums in Europe.
