About Manchester City

Manchester City were founded in 1880 as St Mark’s (West Gorton) and became Ardwick AFC and then Manchester City in 1894. The club played at Maine Road from 1923 to 2003, and has played at the Etihad Stadium, originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, ever since.

City won league titles in 1936/37 and 1967/68, then spent years outside the top flight before a change of ownership in 2008. Sergio Aguero’s last-minute goal on the final day of 2011/12 won the club its first Premier League title, and under Pep Guardiola City won six titles in seven seasons from 2017/18 and completed the treble in 2022/23.

Sergio Aguero is the club’s record goalscorer with 260 goals. City play in sky blue, and their nickname, the Citizens, is a reminder of the club’s local roots. The club won the Champions League for the first time in 2023, beating Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul.

Rivals

Manchester United

The Manchester derby moved from a local contest to a title decider in the 2010s, when City’s rise turned the city’s balance of power on its head.

Liverpool

A modern rivalry built on the title races and cup finals of the 2010s and 2020s.

Arsenal

Arsenal have been City’s closest challengers in several recent title races, which has given the fixture real weight.
