About Sunderland
Sunderland were founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club and turned professional in 1885. The club played at Roker Park from 1898 until 1997, when it moved to the Stadium of Light on the site of the old Monkwearmouth Colliery.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Sunderland were known as the Team of All Talents and won six league titles between 1891/92 and 1935/36. The club won the FA Cup in 1937 and again in 1973, when a Second Division side beat Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley, helped by goalkeeper Jim Montgomery’s famous double save.
Sunderland play in red and white stripes, and their nickname, the Black Cats, appears on the club crest. The club’s recent history was the subject of the Netflix documentary series Sunderland ‘Til I Die.
