What is Serie A?

Serie A is the top tier of Italian football, contested by 20 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 38 matches, home and away, and the bottom three are relegated to Serie B.

An Italian national football championship has been played since 1898, but for its first three decades it ran through a patchwork of regional groups and finals rather than one single table. Serie A took its current shape in 1929/30, when the top clubs from across the country were merged into a single round-robin division for the first time.

Juventus have won the title a record 36 times, well clear of Inter Milan (21) and AC Milan (19). Between them, the three clubs known in Italy as the “Big Three” account for the large majority of all scudetti, though nine other clubs — including Bologna, Torino, Napoli, Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio, Cagliari, Hellas Verona and Sampdoria — have also been champions.

Inter Milan retained their crown in 2025/26, a 21st Scudetto overall and their second title in three seasons after also winning in 2023/24. For 2026/27, Frosinone, AC Monza and Venezia have returned to the top flight in place of Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa, who were relegated to Serie B.

How Serie A works

Season structure

20 clubs play each other home and away, 38 matches each and 380 in total. The 2026/27 season began in late August 2026 and finishes on 30 May 2027.

Promotion and relegation

The bottom three clubs are relegated to Serie B. Three clubs come up in their place: the top two automatically promoted from Serie B, and a third through the Serie B play-offs. For 2026/27, Frosinone, AC Monza and Venezia returned to Serie A after Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa went down.

European qualification

The top four qualify for the Champions League, with Italy sometimes earning a fifth berth through UEFA’s association coefficient ranking. The next-best league finisher and the Coppa Italia winner go into the Europa League, with a further place in the Conference League for the next side in the table if the cup places are already accounted for.

Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated first by head-to-head results between the clubs concerned, then by overall goal difference and goals scored. If a tie for the title, relegation or a European place remains at the end of the season, Italian football uses a one-off play-off match to settle it.

The story so far

For much of the 20th century Serie A was shared between Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan, with Torino’s great “Grande Torino” side of the 1940s and Bologna’s 1960s teams the main clubs to break the pattern. The 2006 Calciopoli match-fixing scandal reshaped the league, with Juventus stripped of two titles and relegated before returning to the top flight the following season.

Juventus rebuilt to dominate the 2010s, winning nine consecutive Scudetti between 2011/12 and 2019/20, a run unmatched by any club in one of Europe’s major leagues. Since then the title has been shared far more widely: Inter Milan, AC Milan and Napoli have all won since 2020/21, with Napoli’s 2022/23 triumph under Luciano Spalletti ending a 33-year wait for the club’s third Scudetto, and Antonio Conte leading them to a fourth in 2024/25.

Inter Milan enter 2026/27 as back-to-back-adjacent champions, having won two of the last three titles (2023/24 and 2025/26), while Juventus, Milan and Napoli remain the clubs most likely to challenge them at the top of the table.
