Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, played by 18 clubs from August to May.
What is the Eredivisie?
The Eredivisie is the top tier of Dutch football, contested by 18 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 34 matches, home and away, meeting each opponent twice. The bottom two clubs are relegated automatically to the Eerste Divisie, and the third-from-bottom club must survive a promotion/relegation play-off against Eerste Divisie opposition to stay up.
It has carried the Eredivisie name since the 1956/57 season, when the Dutch FA (KNVB) introduced full-time professional football and replaced the old regional championship system that had crowned a national champion since 1898.
Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord, known as Dutch football’s “Big Three”, are the only clubs never to have been relegated since the Eredivisie began, and between them they have won the large majority of titles. Ajax lead with 36, PSV have 27 and Feyenoord 16.
PSV Eindhoven enter 2026/27 as three-time defending champions, having won 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 for their 27th Dutch title overall. ADO Den Haag, SC Cambuur and Willem II have returned to the Eredivisie after winning promotion from the Eerste Divisie, replacing Volendam, NAC Breda and Heracles Almelo.

The story so far
Dutch domestic football has been dominated by Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Rotterdam since well before the Eredivisie’s 1956/57 launch. Ajax’s “totaalvoetbal” sides of the 1970s under Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, and PSV and Feyenoord’s own golden eras, built the rivalry that still defines the league today. Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord remain the only three clubs never to have been relegated from the Eredivisie.
PSV’s run of three straight titles through 2025/26 took their total to 27, still well short of Ajax’s competition-record 36, but enough to make them the division’s dominant force heading into 2026/27. Feyenoord’s 2022/23 title, their first in six years at the time, remains the most recent occasion either of the other two members of the Big Three interrupted PSV or Ajax at the top.
