The story so far

The Gold Coast Club Competition was the predecessor of the league from 1933, and the national top-flight league was established in 1958. It turned professional and took its present name ahead of 1989/90.

The 2018 league was terminated midway on 7 June 2018 after the ‘Number 12’ corruption exposé, and the 2019/20 season was halted and then cancelled because of COVID-19. In July 2025 the Ghana Football Association awarded broadcasting and commercialisation rights to Media General Ghana (TV3).
