Standings, fixtures, results and everything you need to know about La Liga, the top tier of Spanish football, played by 20 clubs from August to May.
What is La Liga?
La Liga is the top tier of Spanish football, contested by 20 clubs each season from August to May. Every club plays 38 matches, home and away, and the bottom three are relegated to Segunda División.
It began in 1929 with just 10 founding clubs, making it one of the earliest national leagues in Europe. FC Barcelona won that inaugural title, beating Real Unión on the final day after Real Madrid lost away at Athletic Bilbao.
Two clubs have dominated the competition ever since: Real Madrid have won it 36 times and Barcelona 29 times, more than every other club combined. Atlético Madrid (11), Athletic Bilbao (8) and Valencia CF (6) are the next best represented on the roll of honour. El Clásico, the fixture between Real Madrid and Barcelona, is one of the most-watched matches in world club football.
Barcelona enter 2026/27 as defending champions after winning their 29th title in 2025/26. Through the opening rounds of the new season they have made an unbeaten start at the top of the table, with Atlético Madrid and Real Betis Seville closest behind them.

The story so far
La Liga’s history has been shaped above all by the rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, who between them have won 65 of the 97 completed seasons. Real Madrid’s dominance of the 1950s and 1960s, built around a European Cup dynasty, established the club as the league’s benchmark, while Barcelona’s Cruyff-influenced sides of the 1990s and the Guardiola era from 2008 redefined the club’s identity and produced some of the most celebrated teams in the sport’s history.
Other clubs have broken through only occasionally. Atlético Madrid won titles in 1996, 2014 and 2021, each time interrupting a period of Madrid or Barcelona dominance, while Athletic Bilbao and Valencia’s championships mostly date from earlier decades of the competition.
Barcelona head into 2026/27 looking to defend the title they won in 2025/26, their 29th, as they continue to close the gap on Real Madrid’s all-time record of 36.
